THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8 PM:  A U S T R A L I A !

We don’t visit Australia as often as we’d like to but it’s literally one of the more amazing places on Earth, and there’s a newly vibrant wine culture as well. Tonight our friend Elish from Little Peacock Imports is here to share some new wines and some stories at the Lions Club Bar, and we’re very excited for this all-red Aussie edition our weekly party. As one of the guys behind the counter at Emily’s Pork Store once said “Barbecue season? Fuggedaboutit!”

Let there be WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!

Paxton Wines, Graciano 2017

Take a walk on the light side. This fun Graciano from McLaren Vale in South Australia offers bright red fruit, savory notes and white pepper. It’s quite playful on the palate and just what we want with a late dinner or later-night chat with an old friend. Organic & biodynamic. Love this wine and it will love you back! $23

Tim Smith, Bugalugs Grenache 2018

Winemaker Tim Smith has a reputation as something of a wild guy. The truth is he’s a very exacting winemaker, as you’ll see when you taste this exceedingly well-priced and very dialed-in hand-picked old-vine Grenache. Upfront red fruit is followed by deeper mineral notes and a luxurious finish. There’s a very small percentage of Mataro (aka Mourvedre) in this vineyard and in this wine. Maybe that’s what gives it that extra push and lovely Rhône-iness. Deal alert! Unfined & unfiltered.  $20

Chalk Hill, Wits End Luna Shiraz McLaren Vale 2016

This easy sipper and very popular party wine – this is a party wine if ever I saw one – goes down easy. The fruit comes from the certified organic Wits End vineyard, a site named for the aggravation caused by the heavy black clay, known as Gilgai, Bay of Biscay or Terra Noir, that makes the vineyard virtually inaccessible in winter! Old vines here, and the wine is aged for a year and half before bottling. No fining or filtration, organic and biodynamic. $19

Eden Road, Syrah Long Road 2015

We love how this wine rings the bell of one of our favorite grapes so clearly. Perhaps that’s why they didn’t use the Australian name “Shiraz”. Earthy with a long finish, the grapes sourced from hill country vineyards. Handpicked fruit is fermented mostly whole cluster and then aged one year in French oak, mostly older. From Canberra in New South Wales, this one’s a classic. $20

2013 Rio Madre Graciano

2013 Rio Madre Graciano

Who’s this Santa guy?! Oh well, I have some Rioja on hand, so can’t complain… Spicy, peppery red and black plums on the nose with a hint of Zinfandel notes and pine tar. Tart blackberries and cherries on the palate. More interesting on the nose than on the palate.
