THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PMLADIES WHO COMMA…

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM

LADIES WHO COMMAND OUR ATTENTION!!!

There’s a lot going on today! Greta Thunberg sailed into New York harbor this morning! It’s Lucy’s Birthday! (It’s also Charlie Parker’s Birthday!) And, our amazing friend Michele from Regal is behind the Lions Club Bar
tonight! (Did we mention she is a Master of Wine
candidate?) Honestly? Get ready… We recently had to put together a
six-pack for a roof-party we’re attending in this Saturday in
Manhattan. (We know, but what can we say? The hosts are visiting from
LA; they don’t know.) Anyway, we always like to bring two of everything
to a get-together so everyone gets to try everything, and we only wanted
to carry a sixer, and we didn’t want to break the bank SOOOO… What
were the best, most affordable, red, white and bubbly in the
store?? They turned out to all be from the same source, and SO, we
rescheduled what we were planning for tonight and Michele graciously
agreed to pour at the last-minute. Here they are! Inspired by our own
picks for said rooftop party this Saturday night, this lineup is Labor Day Dope! This is your 3-day buying opportunity right here babies! It’s a cool 65 degrees in the Shrine of Wine: POPULATION YOU TONIGHT! VIVA WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!

Château Bouscasse, Les Jardins Philosophiques 2014 & 2015

Can you say Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Sec? Us
neither – and who cares! At $20, this complex, mineral, magic and very
dry version of this Gascon classic may have you asking “Is this the best
cheese pairing ever?” When our friend Dave Macaninch came back from Gascony we were reminded of this almost lost gem of a wine. Most versions are too sweet for American palates, but this very dry bottle from superstar winemaker Alain Dumont KILLS IT. Pacherenc-du-Vic-Bilh is the appellation for whites in the region. The
wines are fascinating, deeply textured affairs that go well with river
fish, cured meats, or of course, the duck which the area is famous
for. The most classic pairing is probably Fois Gras with one of the
off-dry versions. This one – from petitcorbu and petitmanseng – is dry
and quite deep. First day it shows an amazing complexity, second day it
settles into a beautiful version of white Burgundy at half the
price. Second day! Yes, another great example of whites evolving after
opening in the fridge! You can also decant to get to this place. We’ll
have both the ’14 and the ’15 for you to compare. We don’t mind telling you we had to make a special effort to keep this baby at… $20!!!!

Castellroig, Cava Brut Vermell 2016

There’s just not a lot of Vermell in the world. This nearly extinct grape has been revived recently by Partida Creus, Rene Barbier, and, here, Castellroig in the Penedes, who are part of the new, better Cava DO Corpinnat. The wine has a slightly orange hue from gentle skin contact with this gris grape. We
love the taste of pale peach and smoky orange peel. Very dry, but not
overly acidic, this is a mellow sparkler suited for our favorite
situation: just chillin’. Amazing, Organic. $27

Di Giovanna, Siciliani Nero d’Avola 2017

Black
plum, herbal notes and licorice. Easy drinking, classic Nero
d’Avola. We’re very happy to have a new, affordable, ORGANIC, Nero
d’Avola. The estate is near the city of Sambuca, the setting of
Visconti’s epic masterpiece, The Leopard. With vineyards located high above the floating land, at the base of a rough cliff,
two brothers fight for the culture this land once represented. Getting
there is a different story: Only after substantial damage to the bottom
of your car, or a long hike will you be able to access these beautifully
remote high altitude vineyards that are managed in full respect of
organic farming principles. What a view though! The Di Giovanna’s have been viticulturist for more than 5 generations in Sicily,
which explains the extreme passion with which Gunther and Klaus
approach their daily task. Father Sicilian, mother German results in an
energetic though slightly atypical mix of hard working attitude and
straight-shooting intuition. Riccardo Cotarella helps with the winemaking here. Organic, SwissArmyKnife. $14

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM!!!!  SUCCÉS VINÍC…

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM!!!!  SUCCÉS VINÍCOLA!!!

Winemakers at the Lions Club:  Catalunya’s Succés Vinícola

Young
Spanish winemakers behind the bar tonight! Mariona Vendrell and Albert
Canela fell in love studying winemaking in Tarragona and started Succés
Vinícola in 2011 at the tender age of 20. They successfully introduced
themselves to the world of Spanish wine with a still red wine made with
Conca de Barberà’s favorite grape, Trepat. Traditionally, the Trepat
grape was used in the region’s rosé cava and first vinified as red wine
only a decade ago. The couple use Albert’s family’s wine connections to
source Succés’ fruit from older, organically farmed vineyards owned by
local abuelos, and they continue to push the boundaries of what’s
considered possible in the region with good farming and introspective
winemaking. Please come join us to taste through these exuberant wines!

Let there be WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!

Succés Vinícola, Conca de Barberà Parellada Experiència 2018

40-60
year-old bush trained Parellada grown in calcareous clay at between 500
and 700 meters above sea level. Traditionally one of the main grapes
for Cava, Parellada is a late ripening variety that likes these high
altitudes. Success Vinicola is amongst the first producers to make a
still Parellada and is arguably the benchmark producer for the
grape. Experiencia sees 12 hours of skin-contact. Fresh, lively, and
bright – you can taste the salt from the calcium in the the clay.
Organic and natural. $25

Succés Vinícola, Trepat Rosado Patxanga 2018

Patxanga means “party” in Catalan! Everybody’s
going to want to take this one home. 100% Trepat sourced from 40
year-old bush-trained vines grown calcareous clay @ 400-500 m.
Hand-picked, spontaneous fermentation and aged in steel with minimal
sulfites added. Exceedingly fresh with some herbaceous notes alongside
the red fruit. The label and the wine scream “SUMMER!” Organic and
natural. $22

Succés Vinícola, La Cuca de Llum Trepat 2017

And
Cuca de Lum means “Firefly” in Catalan! This is from 30-55 year-old
bush-trained Trepat (native to Conca de Barbera) grown in calcareous
clay at around 500 meters. A large, thin-skinned grape similar to
Poulsard or Schiava, Trepat produces light-bodied, aromatic reds
reminiscent of those from the Jura. There’s Meyer lemon and orange peel
here in amongst the fresh strawberry and pomegranate notes. Hard to stop
drinking this one. Organic and natural. $25

Succés Vinícola, Conca de Barberà Trepat El Mentider Old Vine 2016

100%
Trepat from bush-trained vines between 80 and 120 years old! (That’s
crazy for Trepat!) Also grown in the same clay around 500 meters, these
precious grapes are handpicked. The wine is macerated for about 45 days
and aged in Burgundy barrels. The resulting wine is richer than most
Trepat, with a satisfying earthy depth to it. Mentider means liar in
Catalan, as this wine plays devil’s advocate to most Trepat. A real
treat for lovers of complex, but lighter reds. Organic and natural. $40

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM:

WINE VS. WINE: WHITE BURGUNDY EDITION!

Four Faces of White Burgundy

If you ask any wine geek what has historically been the best wine in the world, they’ll likely say “white Burgundy”. Tonight our friend Nini from David Bowler Wine is in the house to help stretch the boundaries of this historic region, pouring four very different white wines from Burgundy. Typically we think of rich Chardonnay and Aligoté from the Côtes de Beaune, and Domaine Chevrot represents this traditional terroir very well! But people often forget that chaste, mineral Chablis from the North is also part of Burgundy – relative newcomer Patrick Piuze is our man here. And then there’s Beaujolais, generally treated separately, but also part of larger Burgundy. Here we have a light, crisp Beaujolais Blanc, and on the wild side, an earthy, savory Roussanne.  Both from the legendary Jean-Paul Brun. There’s a lot of delicious diversity on display at the Lions Club tonight. Come on down to where we’re popping’ the bottles, have a snack, and learn more about these amazing wines!

Let there be WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!

Domaine Chevrot, Comme Dessus Santenay 2015

Maranges is located at the southern-most part of the Côte d’Or, and the Chevrot family has been making wine there since 1830. Pablo and Vincent have maintained the traditions of their parents with only one exception:they are converting the vineyards to certified organic viticulture. The palate of this beautiful, classic white Burgundy is lively and fluid, relentlessly unfolding a fruity ripe lemon mixed with a generous mineral finish. This classic ’15 is ready to drink now and would be perfect with smoked trout or chicken tacos. 100% Chardonnay, organic, biodynamic. $40

Patrick Piuze, Chablis Terroir de Fleys 2017

Piuze has said “the only truly original thing in the world of wine is the underlying terroir and I have nothing else interesting to add.“The man makes around twenty different Chablis each year, most of them from very specific vineyards that he’s selected and negotiated to work in. He’s unlike any other producer really. The Fleys is a particular bargain in the line-up. Normally the village level wines are fermented and aged in tank, this vineyard has such great quality, that Piuze treated it like his 1er and Grand Cru vineyards, fermenting and aging the wine entirely in neutral barrels for ten months. It works out – the wine reads like an older 1er Cru. 100% Chardonnay. $40

Jean-Paul Brun, Beaujolais Blanc Chardonnay Terres Dorées 2017

Jean-Paul Brun is located in Charnay, a village in Southern Beaujolais just north of Lyons, in a beautiful area of sandy, limestone-rich clay soils known as the "Region of Golden Stones”. He’s been building up Terres-Dorees since 1979 and we’ve carried a number of his wines over the years. Jean-Paul is not an adherent or advocate of “natural wine” per se, yet is among the most natural of Beaujolais vignerons, uninterested in trend or fashion but deeply committed to purity of expression of fruit and site. The individuality of those expressions–the fact that each is a different wine from all of the others – is intentionally emphasized by his choice to label every one of his many bottlings with a completely different label.  The crisp, mineral Beaujolais Blanc has long been a staple here at Dandelion.   Hand-harvested, 100% Chardonnay, 80+ year old vines, Organic  $21

Jean-Paul Brun, VDP Roussanne Terres Dorées 2016

Jean-Paul has been making this wine for about 10 years, from vines that are about 15 years old now, planted on the clay-limestone soils typical of his Charnay estate parcels. Roussanne is typically a Rhône grape, and it’s quite surprising to see it growing here in southern Burgundy. Our favorite wine critic Jancis Robinson said this about the wine; “VERY surprising to find this in amongst the Burgundies…”It shows a much different profile under the hand of Jean-Paul, more rustic, with grain-like flavors and a wild, slightly funky nose. Natural-yeast fermentation, aging in stainless steel, and bottled in the spring. Only 5000 bottles made in 2016. 100% Roussanne, Organic $25

THURSDAY NIGHT TASTING 6-8PM:

MEINKLANG!

We
think it’s a very good idea to always have at least one sparking wine
in your fridge at all times, and that’s never more true than in Early Spring. Tonight’s
tasting presents a couple of new, very exciting and spring-appropriate
sparklers that we’ve become very fond of lately. Our new friend
Stéphanie Tonnoir from Zev Rovine Selections
will be behind the Lions Club Bar to pour them for you, and she’ll also
be showing off a fantastic and very affordable Loire red that you
should not miss! Won’t you please join us for your weekly dose of…

WINE, BREAD, CHEESE, and VINYL!

Longhorn
cattle on the Meinklang farm, a diverse cover crop sprouts up between
the vines, loosening the soil and encouraging the vines to fight for
their share of nutrients. The birds and the bees are encouraged to come
help with the biodynamic process. Handmade concrete eggs help their
production by providing a perfect amount of micro-oxidation, enhancing
their wine’s aromas and flavor. Angela and Werner Michlits are at the
center of this family-owned, biodynamic, organic winery.

Meinklang, Österreich Frizzante Rosé (NV)

At
Meinklang, raising grapes and making wine are seen as one facet of the
larger farm. And this farm is wide and varied, a certified biodynamic
agricultural operation cultivating a number of different crops as well
as raising 300 Angus cattle. The farm’s diversity is enriched by ancient
grains such as spelt, farro and Einkorn wheat, as well as the fruit
orchards and vegetable gardens, meadows of wild herbs and flowers and
the elegant charm of the grapevines. The estate represents what used to
be common practice everywhere in the countryside: a mixed farming
operation, managed by extended family. The vineyards are well integrated
into the farm, and the farm is set in the middle of a World Heritage
Site on the Eastern side of the Neusiedlersee Lake, near the Hungarian
border. Maybe you’d like to try their sparkling rosé? Pinot Noir ripens
nicely in Austria these days and this cherry-mineral Burgenland beauty
will stop you in your tracks. We love it with spicy shrimp tacos or
scallion pancakes. Organic, Biodynamic, Natural, Unfiltered, Vegan. $19

Meinklang, Österreich Foam Red Natural 2017

Sparkling
red worth drinking is hard to come by. But, oh look – here’s some! Have
you ever had Gamaret before? Us neither. But it’s no surprise you’d
need to look far afield to find the right grape for a wine like this.
There’s also 20% Blaufrankish. The overall effect is surprisingly dry,
wild, special and pure. Foam is an excellent word to describe the
texture here, and the flavors tend toward the black end of the fruit
spectrum. Kills against charcuterie or ALONE! Organic, Biodynamic,
Natural, Unfiltered, Vegan.  $30

Domaine de la Chevalerie, Bourgueil Diptyque 2015

This little-known domaine makes some of the best Cabernet Franc wines in the world. – Rajat Parr & Jordan Mackay, The Sommelier’s Atlas of Taste
(2018)  Domaine de la Chevalerie is one of the oldest estates in
Restigne, a small village near Bourgueil in the Loire. Pierre Caslot –
who took over in the mid-70’s – is a 14th generation winemaker on the
estate. He’s been working biodynamicaly for years and this lovely,
playful Cab Franc is his gift to the world. Violet and lilac on the nose
with some bing cherry, hibiscus and rose – river rocks in the
background. Supple and lightly tart on the palate with a nice
finish. Let’s party! Organic and Biodynamic. $17
