Louis Roederer Brut
Félicitations, France and Les Bleus!!! This calls for rivers of champagne, which makes me so happy. Lemon, pear, crème, jasmine and white tea notes on the nose. Lemon, apple flesh, white tea, and bread on the palate. Nice balance of white fruit and citrus. Great entry-level champagne. Cheers to the World Cup champions!!
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier
2012 Pilizota Babić Reserve
Oh heyyyy… knockin’ back some Croatian wine while watching the World Cup. This starts with a minty, earthy note on the nose, like fresh mint leaves over some wet horse stable or a mint julep at the Kentucky derby. Dark fruit, deep spice, and some dried dark tea also on the nose. Plums and figs on the palate with sweet spice, herbs, fresh tobacco, and some remaining horse notes. This is some great, interesting stuff!
2013 Domaine Gerard Julien & Fils Echezeaux Grand Cru
OH YOU FANCY, HUH. This is a grand cru Echezeaux (prime Burgundy real estate for those in the know), y’alls. Very floral and perfumed on the nose with a bouquet of red flowers combined with an aroma of blackberries and enoki mushrooms. Tart cherries on the palate with lingonberries and even a whiff of charcuterie. Still very perfumed with a lingering finish. It’ll lighten your wallet, but you know what? You found an Echezeaux. You shouldn’t give a fox (hehe) about the price.
Echezeaux (Côtes de Nuits, Burgundy), FRANCE
2016 Bodegas Vicente Gandia “Nebla” Verdejo
A little Spanish white on the patio on a fine day never hurt anybody. Waxy lemon, apple, pear, underripe tropical fruit, and hay notes on the nose. Light on the palate with lemon, apple, pear, and tropical notes. Simple, but nice while you’re cooking up a nice summer meal.
2012 Brandborg Oregon Riesling
Puckering up for some Oregon Riesling! Honeysuckle, yellow flowers, lemon, lime, and whiff of slate on the nose. Honeysuckle, golden apples, and lemon on the attack of the palate. Lime on the finish.
Umpqua Valley, Oregon, USA
2008 Monemvasia Maleatis Agiorgitico
A little Agiorgitico goes a long way some days. A full nose of red berries, licorice, and smoke. Darker on the palate with red and black fruit, blackberries, and clove. A typical greek table wine to have at a local greek restaurant!
Weingut Emil Bauer & Sohne Secco Rosé
It’s full-on rosé season up in my piece, y’alls! And this one’s German to boot! Apples, ruby red grapefruit, white and underripe strawberries on the nose. A bit of tingly prickliness on the tongue. Red apples, red grapefruit, and strawberries on the palate.
2013 Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve
Trimbach always makes some tongue-lickin’ good wines. Green apples, pears, and lime notes on the nose. Pears on the palate with raw white almonds, lemon, and stone. Not overly complex, but this is a solid example of Alsatian Pinot Gris from a top producer.
2015 Nava Real Rueda Verdejo
Waking up in bed with this Spanish white ain’t the worst thing to happen to me. Lemon, apple, pear on the nose. Much the same on the palate with a hint of bitterness on the finish.
Rueda (Castilla y Leon), SPAIN
2015 Conti di Buscareto Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi
Enjoying my afternoon with a simple Italian white. Brown apples and browning pears on the nose. Fresher on the palate with Fuji apples, lemon, pear, and white nuts. Pretty nice for the price.
